List 10 musical artists you like, in no specific order (do this before reading the questions below). Really, don’t read the questions below until you pick your ten artists!!!

  1. The National
  2. Sufjan Stevens
  3. Andrew Bird
  4. Bright Eyes
  5. Beirut
  6. Fleet Foxes
  7. Noah and the Whale
  8. Bon Iver
  9. Grizzly Bear
  10. Spoon

What was the first song you ever heard by 6?
White Winter Hymnal.

What is your favorite song of 8?
hmm, probably Re: Stacks, but I love absolutely all of his music, no question.

What kind of impact has 1 left on your life?
The National has changed my life. they are the only band that I can listen to in any situation, at any time, in any place, and without certain songs of theirs, I don’t know where I’d be. I can’t even express the gratitude that I have for their music.

What is your favorite lyric of 5?

oh, Beirut?! I can hardly choose. but probably

and I would love to see that day, that day is mine

when she will marry me outside with the willow trees

and play the songs we made, they made me so

and I would love to see that day, her day was mine

every little piece of Postcards from Italy rips my heart out and paints it gold.

How many times have you seen 4 live?
Bright Eyes? none, unfortunately! I might be seeing Monsters of Folk next month, though.

What is your favorite song by 7?
Noah and the Whale: Give a Little Love, easily.

Is there any song by 3 that makes you sad?
Mr. Bird’s music only ever seems to make me happy. some of it reminds me of sad things, though.

What is your favorite song by 9?
there are so many songs by Grizzly Bear that I absolutely adore, but Deep Sea Diver, Shift, and While You Wait for the Others will always have my heart. boy, am I indecisive.

When did you first get into 2?
Sufjan! ah, my dad and I were driving home from Philadelphia when I was twelve years old when Chicago came on the radio and I fell in love. I took down the lyrics so that I could look them up and I immediately bought all of his music. ‘twas love at first listen.

How did you get into 3?
hm, I remember hearing a lot about Andrew on the radio when I was thirteenish but I was never really into him until I saw his name under my recommendations in Last.fm and gave him a listen. I bought Armchair Apocrypha and the sound grew on me. and now I’m seeing him tomorrow.

What is your favorite song by 4?
Bright Eyes? First Day of My Life might always be my favourite, but I really cannot decide. I have every Bright Eyes album and EP released and I love it all so much.

How many times have you seen 9 live?
ZERO. WHAT IS THIS. the two times they came to my city, I had the opportunity to go but school got in the way.

What is a good memory concerning 10?
I Summon You. Sean’s basement. laughter.

Is there a song by 8 that makes you sad?
almost all of Bon Iver’s music has made me sad at one point or another. Bon Iver is good music to cry to, or cry over.

What is your favorite song of 1?
Slow Show, always.

How did you become a fan of 10?
I remember hearing them a bit when I was much younger, but I never really got into them. and then Sean introduced me to them and I bought Gimme Fiction, which I loved so much that I bought Kill the Moonlight and Ga Ga Ga Ga Ga and Girls Can Tell.

unicornology:

leaving is not enough; you must
stay gone. train your heart
like a dog. change the locks
even on the house he’s never
visited. you lucky, lucky girl.
you have an apartment
just your size. a bathtub
full of tea. a heart the size
of Arizona, but not nearly
so arid. don’t wish away
your cracked past, your
crooked toes, your problems
are papier mache puppets
you made or bought because the vendor
at the market was so compelling you just
had to have them. you had to have him.
and you did. and now you pull down
the bridge between your houses,
you make him call before
he visits, you take a lover
for granted, you take
a lover who looks at you
like maybe you are magic. make
the first bottle you consume
in this place a relic. place it
on whatever altar you fashion
with a knife and five cranberries.
don’t lose too much weight.
stupid girls are always trying
to disappear as revenge. and you
are not stupid. you loved a man
with more hands than a parade
of beggars, and here you stand. heart
like a four-poster bed. heart like a canvas.
heart leaking something so strong
they can smell it in the street.
